This editorial explores Safia Minney’s long-standing commitment to organic cotton, ethical sourcing, and the people behind the fabrics — a conversation about responsibility, transparency, and change in the fashion industry.
Why does your love for organic cotton fabrics come from?
I’m passionate about organic cotton farming, especially supporting small-scale cotton farmers in India. Founding People Tree over 30 years ago, I worked very closely with farmers to build one of the first GOTS supply chains because I saw the difference it makes to people, nature and rural communities.
So why did you start importing organic cotton fabrics?
When I ran People Tree, designers often asked us for fabrics for their own collections. It broke my heart that we couldn’t sell fabrics to them. So, when I visited Sustainably Crafted Clothing in Southern India, which works directly with Chetna Organics India and noticed beautiful, high-quality fabrics (that were surplus from fashion brands). I imported them by sea freight to keep the carbon footprint low. And because of Brexit, I am so delighted that you partnered with me to market and distribute the fabrics in the EU.
As a designer, why do you enjoy using organic cotton?
For me fashion has always been a tool for change. I love the quality and breathability of organic fabrics and knowing their provenance. There is no finer cloth for me. I’m always delighted to see what other designers make with organic cotton and how it can be styled in unique and individual ways by the wearer.
