We frequently receive questions about how to waterproof fabrics in the most sustainable way possible – a topic that becomes particularly relevant when the German summer once again shows its rainy side. Especially with high-quality natural materials, it's worth taking a closer look and opting for environmentally friendly solutions.
Proper waterproofing is particularly important for materials like our RAIN performance fabric made from 100% GOTS-certified cotton. Due to its very dense weave, the cotton fibers swell upon contact with water, forming a natural protective barrier. This barrier is effective, but not indefinitely durable: Prolonged heavy rain can diminish the water-repellent effect over time.
The good news is: With the right methods, this can be countered easily – and sustainably.
Two tried-and-tested options are Fjällräven's Greenland Wax and Nikwax waterproofing spray. Both products make fabrics more resistant to moisture without unnecessarily harming the environment or compromising comfort.
Fjällräven's Greenland Wax is a true classic, used since the 1960s. The wax is rubbed directly onto the fabric, applying a little more generously to high-wear areas like shoulders and knees. It is then gently heated with a hairdryer or iron so that it melts into the fibers. This process can be repeated several times, depending on the desired level of water repellency. Another practical advantage is that the wax washes completely out of the fabric after two or three washes, restoring its breathability. The product is also ideal for everyday use: waxed clothing can be washed with other laundry without any problems, and at around ten euros, Greenland Wax is also affordable.
A second, equally compelling option is offered by Nikwax. For many years, the company has relied on water-based waterproofing treatments and completely avoids fluorocarbons, which are considered harmful to the environment and human health. The waterproofing is based on an elastic molecule that bonds with water-attracting fibers while leaving microscopic gaps. This allows the fabric to remain breathable while simultaneously making it more water-repellent, tear-resistant, and durable. The product is complemented by a consistently sustainable corporate philosophy that actively supports environmental and nature conservation projects.
Fazit
Sustainable waterproofing doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Products like Greenland Wax or Nikwax effectively protect natural fabrics without compromising their beneficial properties or harming the environment. By consciously caring for your fabrics, you extend their lifespan and are well-prepared even in the rain.
