Collection: Vichy Organic Fabrics

Vichy fabric from Lebenskleidung – a check pattern has never looked better.

Vichy fabric is a bit of a mystery. Hardly anyone knows what the name and pattern actually mean, but everyone can agree on one thing: the fabric looks fantastic.

Often, it comes – as is the case with us – in a color combination of white and red, blue, or green, which, depending on the weave, form a fine or somewhat larger check pattern. The pattern found its way into (pop) culture quite early: In the 1950s, the famous French actress and singer Brigitte Bardot wore a dress made of gingham; this would not be the last picture in which the style icon was seen wearing this pattern.

The name actually originates from the central French spa town of Vichy, where the gingham fabric was produced in the early 19th century. The etymology in English is slightly different, and the origin of the term 'gingham' used here is not entirely clear – but that's not so important, because for us, what really matters is that the fabric is good. It's woven from GOTS-certified cotton and we offer it in various designs, qualities, and colors – for example, as a flannel or with a very small check pattern.

The history of Vichy check fabrics

Want to learn more about the fascinating history of gingham fabrics? Let's go! These timeless and charming fabrics have a long tradition and remain very popular in the fashion industry today. The gingham pattern originally comes from the French village of Vichy, hence the name. In the 1950s, the pattern gained immense popularity and became a true classic in the fashion world.

The characteristic gingham pattern consists of equally sized squares, usually in color combinations of white and a vibrant color such as red, blue, green, or pink. Gingham fabrics exude a nostalgic and playful atmosphere, often evoking images of relaxed picnics in the countryside and the lightness of summer.
