Collection: Terry fabric

Terry fabric fabric – an exceptional material

Terry fabric is a bit of a mystery. Little is known about its origins, yet it's ubiquitous and has even somehow made its way into the fashion world. It supposedly originated in Turkey, where the English banker Henry Christy discovered it during a stay in Constantinople and brought it back to England. His brother Richard figured out how to produce the fabric using a machine – and promptly patented the process.

Incidentally, Queen Victoria was the first to receive the fine towels – and immediately reordered them in larger quantities. To this day, the Christy company remains a leader in terry fabric products.

Overview of the terry fabric fabric used in clothing

The reason terry fabric is often associated with towels or washcloths is due to its looped structure. This makes it absorbent and allows it to massage your skin without being scratchy. Our selection includes both knitted and woven terry fabric.

  • While woven terry fabric has the famous loops on both the front and back, knitted terry fabric only has loops on the front. For this reason, our woven terry fabric is even more absorbent and has a great exfoliating effect, while knitted terry fabric is better suited for clothing. Finally, our sweat terry fabric is a very special, flowing terry fabric that you can use beautifully for delicate scarves, cardigans, or light summer jackets.
  • The terry fabric used in Lebenskleidung products is made from the finest organic cotton, which carries the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) seal. This is important to us because we care not only about our environment, but also about the production conditions of our fabrics.
  • With the certificate of the European toy standard EN71-3, we also promise you that your terry fabric is suitable for all types of toys.
  • Terry fabric is very easy to work with, making it a great choice not just for sewing experts. One thing to keep in mind is the needle size. For working with terry fabric, it's best to use a larger needle (75-90) in combination with 120-weight thread.
