Eva is the founder of Lemon Sky Fabrics and loves patterns that tell stories. Inspired by the shapes of the 60s and 70s, she designs fabrics with character, color, and attitude. In this interview, she talks about her journey into sewing, her design philosophy, and why sustainability is not a trend for her, but a responsibility.
Who are you and how did you get into sewing?
I'm Eva, founder of Lemon Sky Fabrics. I grew up on the Baltic Sea – a true Kiel native – and even as a child, I was happiest with a paintbrush or crayon in my hand. After graduating from high school, I initially studied business administration; the creative side of things only came back into my life later. As a mother of nine, I discovered sewing – and quickly realized that fabrics are my great passion.
How did this passion lead to your own online shop?
Even before I attended my first sewing class, I already had a large stash of fabric. I simply couldn't resist the patterns. This enthusiasm never left me – and at some point, it led to the desire not only to discover special fabrics for myself, but also to share them with others. That's how Lemon Sky Fabrics came about.
What inspires you when designing your fabrics?
My designs are meant to make life more colorful and beautiful. I love the bold, geometric patterns of the 60s and 70s as much as opulent floral and paisley patterns in the boho style. Fabrics should bring joy to sewing and become true favorites that you'll love wearing again and again.
What is particularly important to you in your fabrics?
Every sewn piece should have a wow factor and make its wearer shine. My fabrics should feel good, last a long time, and be something special. My motto is: Be free, wild, and unique – you deserve fabrics that are as special as you are.
Do you work exclusively with your own designs?
In addition to my own designs, I also collaborate with select designers whose style perfectly complements Lemon Sky. This results in a diverse mix of different creative perspectives and constantly offers something new for our customers.
Why does sustainability play such a big role in your fabric selection?
Sewing is more than a trend for me – it's a conscious step away from overconsumption. Sewing is an investment of time, love, and care. That deserves fabrics that are sustainably produced and durable. It's important to me that the fabrics are GOTS-certified and still look beautiful even after many washes.
What does sustainability mean to you personally?
Sustainability means responsibility – towards the people who produce these materials and towards the environment in which we live. It's about making conscious decisions and choosing materials that make sense in the long term.
How long have you been working with Lebenskleidung and why?
I've been working with Lebenskleidung since the very beginning of my fabric journey. I started selling my own handmade children's clothing in 2012, and Ben and his team have been with me from the start. I particularly appreciate their consistent commitment to ecologically and socially responsible textile production, as well as their knowledge of the origin and supply chains of their fabrics.
What connects you to life's clothing?
We share the conviction that every decision counts. Responsibility for future generations begins with small steps – for example, choosing the right materials.
